Owl of Minerva
The wise old owl sat in an oak./The more he saw the less he spoke./The less he spoke he more he heard./Why can't we be more like that wise old bird?' This ceramic sculpture, 'Owl of Minerva', is one of a series of owls. The owl was a symbol of wisdom as it could see in the dark (Greek for 'owl' was glaucus or 'glaring eyes'). The philosopher Hegel famously noted: 'The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of the dusk'.
